The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
