Lando Norris narrowly beat team-mate and championship contender the Australian for the quickest lap in the dying seconds of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who seized the points lead from Piastri by a single point after taking the win in the Mexican Grand Prix recently, topped the Australian by 0.023 seconds. Earlier in the session, Oscar Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver for most of the session before sprint qualifying set to begin at 6:30 PM GMT. Max Verstappen, the only other driver in the championship fight, trailing with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, finished in 17th place as his Red Bull team ran a unique setup. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver to have an incident, if briefly, when he spun at the fourth corner soon after starting. The Japanese spun out over the exit kerbs before spinning across the escape zone, and was lucky to avoid just a slight brush of the fence. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also had a spin, at the final moments of the practice, turning around through the quick descending Mergulho corner approaching the final corner on to the pit straight. Hamilton ended the session in 19th, just behind teammate Charles Leclerc. Norris and Piastri were far ahead of the other competitors, with the German's Sauber in third, 0.619secs behind Piastri's pace. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest, with the Sauber of Bortoleto fifth from Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
