The Trump phenomenon's most telling and characteristic moments – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of deaths due to his slashing to foreign assistance is 600,000 and rising, and recently an analysis projected his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have risked – genuinely, no previous leader would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying large sections of the presidential residence to build a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of multiple the richest Americans, almost all of whom maintain dealings with the government.

As confusing as it is to watch the chief executive attempt to overturn the traditional concept of democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations close to half – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have witnessed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of love into a symbol of hostility who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this has happened at a slower pace, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for many of us.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

The Savior's reaction to hostility is to offer the other cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a means to teach the assailant; his method regarding offenses states that when a person pilfers your coat you should give them your pullover too.

The apparent and direct fact that Christ in biblical accounts calls for a form of profound affection centered on the impoverished is what has always made Christianity somewhat of a controversial faith: engaging for the general public, but because of its natural unconventionality needing to be contained. In the fifties it was contained via weakening – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Struggle for the Best of Us

Hence I have become encouraged to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump develop during the previous year. It has been great solace to assist in constructing the movement that has protested openly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated citizens to show up in numbers during minor elections. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners at every demonstration and calls to the best parts in US history.
